Mum: Darling, have they had Albert’s funeral yet? Do send a wreath of flowers for your father and me, would you? Oh, and could you ship me a box of Maggie’s youthful shimmer serum and a couple of her sensual lavender body scrubs? I know you said she might’ve poisoned her husband, but she really does make the yummiest things.

I’m anxious to get back to Grimdale and find this Kieran Myers, but first I have to go back to the bookshop.

I like the bookshop. It contains a lot of strong smells that make Ambrose happy – old leather, the woody tang of paper and ink, the faint birdiness of the raven, and something I can only describe as ‘hot men who like reading.’

And I like Mina. I didn’t realize how desperate I am for friends – human, corporeal friends – until I saw her yesterday and realized we have the same taste in fashion and that she’s cool and fun and blind, like Ambrose. I barely said two words to her and already I’m afraid that I’m going to fuck it up.

Hi, I’m Bree and I see ghosts. And one of my ghosts can’t cross over until we solve his murder and make sure his wife isn’t in danger. Can you help us?

Yup, I don’t sound like a psychopath, at all.

But even after I buy a lemon drizzle cake and let the ghosts sniff it to their heart’s content, they won’t let me leave without seeing Mina. So I trudge up the steps of the bookshop and step inside.

Back so soon? The raven greets me with a dip of his wing. Mina’s in the main room if you want to talk to her. It’s a good time because Heathcliff has stepped out for his lunchtime whisky.

Heathcliff. Right, that’s the grumpy owner. One of her boyfriends.

Who calls their son Heathcliff these days?

“Thanks,” I whisper to the raven as I shuffle past, step around the ghost of a medieval scribe laden down with rolls of parchment, and enter the main room. Mina’s behind the desk again, head resting contentedly in her hands as she listens to an audiobook.

I clear my throat.

“Hey, did you see what’s going on in the square?”

Mina pauses her audiobook and looks up. I can tell that from this distance she can’t see me, so I step closer, beneath the circle of light cast by an enormous antique lamp. Her eyes light up with recognition.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you,” I say quickly, before I lose my nerve. “I’m surprised it’s so quiet in here. I would have thought this festival would attract lots of people to a bookshop.”

“You’d think.” Mina jabs her finger out the window. “They’re all lining up at Rasmussen Books to see the First Folio. Our perfectly-ordinary popular books can’t compete.”

My cheeks heat up, remembering that not twenty minutes ago I was inside that shop watching Ambrose dunk his head inside the priceless tome. “If it’s any consolation, I went there this morning, and your bookshop is much cooler.
